That said, I am sure everyone will have their own story and opinions and they may differ greatly to mine, so best of luck with whatever you choose to do. Given that you wish to run Windows 7 guests, then I don't see any reason to go to a Windows 8.x host unless that's all you have access to. My wife has been grateful for that at least! I have thought, many times, of reverting my laptop to Windows 7 圆4 (against the IT directive), but having Windows 8.1 on it gives me a positive reinforcement, daily of why I don't "upgrade" any of my other (personal) systems to it. ![]() This has nothing to do with the new/awful UI either just a myriad of problems with drivers, slow performance, BSODs, strange sounds that come from it for no reason (Windows sounds that seem to be associated with nothing that is actually happening, at least not on the desktop), bizarre bugs either existing or new ones delivered by Windows update. ![]() My HP EliteBook Workstation (i7-2820QM) work laptop used to run Win 7 圆4, but my IT department made me "upgrade" to Windows 8.1 because "it's the latest standard" and my laptop has gone from running perfectly, to a daily pain point. Honestly though, I would stay away from Windows 8/8.1 圆4 as a host, since you want your host to be as solid/stable as possible and my experience with Windows 8.1 leaves a lot to be desired. ![]() I can't recommend against other operating systems like Linux since I haven't really used Workstation on there for anything, but a look see. VMware Workstation runs on most 64-bit Windows or Linux host operating systems : Windows 8 Windows 7 Windows Server 2012 Windows Server 2008 Ubuntu 10.04 and above Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8 and above CentOS 5.8 and above Oracle Linux 5.8 and above openSUSE 11.2 and above SUSE Linux 11. Based on my own experiences I would recommend Windows 7 圆4.
